Lighting will always be, in my opinion, the most intrinsically important aspect of any space, whether indoors or outdoors. It has the power – yes, power – to completely morph the appearance of a space, while having a great impact of any living creature – especially humans. We will eventually delve into light therapy, further down our adventure together.
In the meantime, let’s also put aside accent lighting and task lighting as we concentrate on ambient lighting. My ultimate favorite: Le Chandelier.
First, as a practical person who thrives to maximize experiences, situations and objects, ambient lighting is my go-to as it has the ability to effortlessly offer diffused, hard, soft, specular light. Second, there are so many options to choose from! One can choose amongst many styles: candle, shaded, drum, globe, geometric, sputnik, wagon wheel, empire, lantern and crystal. Third, although we know that class is usually a question of modesty, there are a few exceptions. Crystal chandeliers being one of them – a major exception – go BIG. That being said, make no mistake, make sure you go clear as you go big. Lastly, just as an engagement ring, quality over size is a must, if you should have to choose between the two.
I personally believe that certain things are best to be bought pre-loved – such as crystal chandeliers… or yacht, I suppose ( I do not own one – yet). Many luxury consignment businesses, antique shops and classifieds sites often have chandelier listed. You would be surprised how desperate people moving are willing to sell high quality crystal chandeliers. They will “give it away” as the alternative is to leave it to the new owners. Be prepared to get (or pay someone to) up that horribly high ladder to uninstall, pack and install that prized item. And pray, just pray that all the little crystals make it home with you. It will take countless hours to a few days to reconstruct that candelabrum. But once achieved – Oh, the glory!

We decided to go with a Murano Venini chandelier. Craftsmanship, history and elegance in a single body of work. It also doubles as a conversation piece. I believe that most items in your home, if not all, should be conversation pieces. When entertaining returns as “a thing”, you will better understand the importance of said pieces.
In the late 13th century, all the glassmakers in Venice were required to move to Murano. In the following century, the island became famous and Murano was the main producer of glass in Europe. Glassmaking is still the island’s main industry and artisans still employ centuries-old techniques.
This chandelier, which is located in our reception area, took 5 days to complete.
“Alza il tuo bicchiere a Murano !” (Raise your glass to Murano !).
